About the county

Organized 1859

Carter County is governed by a three-member County Commission — a presiding commissioner and associate commissioners for the east and west districts — alongside a set of independently elected offices. The county seat is Van Buren.

The old stone courthouse flooded in 2017, and county offices have since moved to the new courthouse and justice center at 1122 Main Street, which also houses the Sheriff’s office and jail. See the office directory below for each office’s phone number.
